CHAPTER ELEVEN

TAYLOR AND CHRIS went back to Raine’s neighbourhood armed with photographs of Siobhan Silva. No one on her street recognized Silva, so they continued on, heading towards Les Beau’s. If Taylor was right about Silva living in the area, Chris figured they might get lucky.

They’d been at it for an hour when a wet snow began to fall. Taylor was already chilled to the bone. The dampness made it even worse. She stepped into a vape store about a block and a half from Les Beau’s and showed the picture to the clerk, a young east Indian with a short beard and kind eyes.

“Yeah, that’s Lian. She do something wrong?”

“When’s the last time you saw her?” Taylor asked, ignoring his question.

“A few days ago, I think. She comes in a couple of times a week to buy juice.”

Taylor glanced over her shoulder at the wide open window in the store front. “You ever notice which way she goes when she leaves?”

“Sure. She just lives across the street there.” He nodded out the window. “Above the variety store.”

Taylor looked out at the apartment above the store. Bingo, she thought. “Thanks for your help.”

“What did she do? Kill someone?”

Taylor walked out, leaving his question hanging in the air. She pulled out her cell phone and called Chris, who was making her way down the opposite side of the street. When Chris answered, she said, “I think I found her apartment.” She started across the street as Chris came out of the variety store.

“Yeah, me too.” She stopped and looked up at the apartment.

“How do you want to handle it?” Taylor said into her phone even though she was standing next to Chris now.

Chris looked over at her, rolled her eyes, then dropped the phone from her ear and ended the call. “You think she’s still here?”

“Only one way to find out.” Taylor stepped up to the black door next to the store, turned the handle, and was surprised to find it unlocked. A long narrow staircase led up to the second floor. At least it was clean and didn’t stink of stale urine. She climbed the stairs as quietly as she could with Chris following up behind her. The door at the top was also painted black. Taylor stood on one side of the door while Chris took up a position on the other side and they listened to the muffled sounds of a TV playing inside. At Chris’s nod, Taylor knocked on the door.

She knocked again after a few moments, but the only sounds were coming from the TV. She couldn’t hear anyone moving around inside. “Not here,” Taylor whispered.

“Unless she saw us out the window,” Chris whispered back. She needed a warrant. She pointed at the stairs just as the door at the bottom opened. Siobhan Silva stared up at them then took off in a flash. Chris let Taylor go ahead of her due to her superior speed.

Taylor took the stairs two or three at a time and shot out of the door onto the sidewalk, searching up and down the street.
